PIZZICA, THE TARANTULA DANCE - WORKSHOP ON SOUTH ITALY FOLK TRADITION

What is Pizzica?

The pizzica is a popular dance of Salento, the music that marked the ancient healing ritual against the bite of Tarantula, a dangerous spider.

With the use of various instruments, among which the tambourine and the violin emerged, the plucked women danced for day, or even weeks for the cure of tarantate.

ANDREA RIZZO

Andrea was born in Lecce, Italy. Since she was a little girl, she had a passion for folk music and folk dancing. Under the guidance of her grandfather Antonio Rizzo, Andrea was able to learn both the singing and dancing of traditional south Italian music. Andrea danced professionally on the Italian tour of La Notte della Taranta from 2006 to 2012.

CHIARA FELLINE

Chiara was born in Nardo', a small city near Lecce, in the heart of Salento. She learnt to dance Pizzica when she was in middle school and thanks to one of her teachers she was able to participate in national Folklore competitions. Chiara loves teaching others about Salento's traditions.
